ANGEL ISLAND ARCHIVES NECROPOLIS PROJECT

The Angel archives, located on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, are an ongoing effort to preserve what fragments of information our predecessors salvaged during the early years of Collapse. Such fragments are scattered and poorly organized - although there is a wealth of information beyond any rational expectation from this period, it is difficult to make sense of it. The Necropolis Project is my effort to assemble relevant fragments into - and, in places, to portray through art and narrative - a working image of the period. If not necessarily a perfect historical depiction, my hope is to concisely demonstrate the mindsets and circumstances of the people who lived through the Collapse. The effort presently consist of two forms:

The comic is a fictionalized artistic rendition of the most complete set of journals available in the archives. Although I have taken some artistic and poetic liberties in their portrayal, the events depicted are a matter of archival record.

The fragments are pulled from a wide variety of personal journals, news archives, magazines, oral histories, and other records collected by the Archives. I have attempted to select salient excerpts, but their relevance may not always be immediately apparent. Their purpose is to supplement the fictionalized account; casual readers may choose to disregard them, but it is my hope - and my belief - that these records will serve to better inform you on the subject at hand.

This is a story of devastation, and loss, and pain, but it is not the story of the end. This is not the story of those who died.

This is the story of those who lived.
